For anyone on the fence about using a layover to see Istanbul, this was worth it. My friend and I were met right at the airport and the transfer into the city was smooth, even in the chilly January drizzle. Our guide timed everything so we caught the soft late-afternoon light at Süleymaniye Mosque, with tea overlooking the Bosphorus while the minarets turned silhouette in the mist. He knew exactly where to stand on the terrace for the best photos without other groups in the frame. The only downside was a short wait in traffic on the way back, which made me a bit nervous, but they were tracking our flight and we still got to the gate earlier than I usually do at home.
