Hagia Sophia is maybe the most famous place in Istanbul. It was first build in 537 AD by Emperor Justinian, and for almost 1,000 years it was the biggest church in the world. Later Ottomans turned it into a mosque, and today its again used as a mosque.
Inside, you can see golden mosaics and huge Islamic calligraphy side by side. The dome is massive, like really massive, and when you stand under it you feel so small. Its one of these places you have to see to beleive.
💡 Tip: Best time to go is early morning, before tour groups come. Dress modest because its still a active mosque.
Right across from Hagia Sophia is the Blue Mosque (real name Sultanahmet Mosque). It has 6 minarets, which was a big deal when it was build in 1616. Inside, more than 20,000 handmade blue Iznik tiles give it that magic atmosphere.
It is still a mosque, so be respectfull. Sometimes tourists cant enter during praying hours, so plan your visit around that. The light inside is so soft, it makes the tiles shine in blue color. Its one of the most photogenic places in the city.
💡 Tip: Go late afternoon when light comes through stained glass, it looks amazing.
For almost 400 years, Ottoman sultans lived in Topkapi Palace. Today its a museum and you can see the treasuries, the sacred relics and also the famous Harem. Walking in the palace gardens with Bosphorus view is like traveling in time.
The rooms are full of details: hand-painted tiles, golden decorations, and ancient objects. You can imagine how life was for the royal family.
💡 Tip: Reserve at least 2-3 hours, because palace is huge.
Under the streets of Sultanahmet you find the Basilica Cistern, a mysterious underground place built in the 6th century. 336 marble columns holding the roof, dim lights and dripping water make it feel like a movie scene.
Dont miss the Medusa heads at the back of the cistern, they are so famous. Many travelers say its one of the most atmosperic places in Istanbul.
💡 Tip: Perfect for hot summer days because its cool inside.
