The Roman Hippodrome: Where the Heart of Istanbul Once Beated(2025)
Walking through Sultanahmet Square today, you see a calm open space. Hard to belive, this was once a roaring arena. The Roman Hippodrome was not only a stadium – it was the stage of power, passion and history in Constantinople.
A Stadium of an Empire
First built in the 3rd century by Septimius Severus, later expanded by Constantine the Great, the Hippodrome could welcome up to 100,000 people. The crowd was divided into Blues and Greens, the famous chariot racing teams. Imagine a football derby today, but ten times more crazy. Sometimes these rivalries even pushed the city into revolt.
What You Still Can See Today
The original structure is gone, but the square keeps its spirit with monuments that survived centuries:
The Egyptian Obelisk – 3,000 years old, brought all the way from Luxor.
The Serpent Column – once stood in the Temple of Apollo in Delphi.
The Walled Obelisk – built by Emperor Constantine VII in the 10th century.
Each step here is like walking on layers of Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman history together.
Why Travelers Shouldn’t Skip It
Most come for Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, but the Hippodrome is the missing piece inbetween. Stand here, close your eyes, and you can almost hear the cheers of the crowds, the sound of horses rushing, the emperors waving to people. This square tells you exactly why Istanbul is called the bridge of civilizations.
