Beneath the busy streets of Sultanahmet lies one of Istanbul’s most magical places: the Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı). When you walk down the stone steps, the city noise disappears. In front of you – hundreds of marble columns reflected in shallow water, lit by soft lights. It feels mysterious, even a bit unreal. No surprise it appeared in James Bond movies and Dan Brown’s Inferno.
A Masterpiece From the 6th Century
The cistern was built in the 6th century during Emperor Justinian’s reign, designed to supply water to the Great Palace of Constantinople. With 336 columns and space for 80,000 cubic meters of water, it’s an engineering wonder of its time. Many of the columns were recycled from earlier Roman temples – that’s why each one has its own style.
👉 Fun fact: locals once forgot the cistern even existed. It was rediscovered in the 16th century when people noticed residents pulling buckets of water (and even fish!) through holes in their basements.
The Mystery of Medusa
One of the highlights of the Basilica Cistern is the pair of Medusa heads supporting two columns. One is upside down, the other sideways. Historians still argue: was it superstition, or simply practical reuse of stone? Either way, these heads are now among the most photographed spots in Istanbul.
