When turist come to Turkey, one of the first questions is always: “Can I drink the tap water here?”
The short answer: Yes, but beter not if you are visitor.
Tap water in Turkey is treated and controlled by city municipalities. In Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara and other big cities, it is officially drinkable. But… the taste is not so good, and old pipes in buildings or tanks can change the quality. That’s why many local people still buy bottled water or use big gallons at home.

👉 Better choice: buy bottled water. It is cheap and everywhere in shops.

You find bottled water in every market and hotel in Turkey. Small 0.5 liter bottle is around 10–20 TL (about 0.30–0.60 USD).
If you stay long, buy big 5 liter bottles, much more economic.
Even Turkish families usually cook with bottled or gallon water. So don’t be suprised when you see locals also not drinking from tap.
Can you drink tap water in Turkey?
Yes, tecnically you can… but for turist it is smart to use bottled water.
Brushing teeth, tea, shower → all fine with tap. Drinking → better no.
