The Secrets Beneath Istanbul: Exploring the Basilica Cistern

The Secrets Beneath Istanbul: Exploring the Basilica Cistern

A City Above, a Secret Below

You walk through the heart of Istanbul — Hagia Sophia behind you, the Blue Mosque ahead — and suddenly, there’s a quiet little entrance. Nothing flashy. Just a sign that says “Basilica Cistern.”

But once you step down those stone stairs, the city disappears.

The air turns cool, the light softens, and you find yourself in another world — an ancient underground palace made of water and shadows.

The Emperor’s Underground Wonder

The Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı) was built in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian I, the same ruler who created Hagia Sophia.

It once stored fresh water for the Great Palace, carried through aqueducts from Belgrad Forest — over 19 km away.

There are 336 marble columns, all recycled from older Roman temples. Every single one tells a story. Some are Corinthian, some Ionic, and a few still bear carvings from forgotten gods.

The Medusa Mystery

Walk to the far back corner, and you’ll find two famous faces — literally.

Two huge Medusa heads, one upside-down, the other sideways.

Why are they there? Nobody truly knows.

Some say they were placed that way to neutralize Medusa’s power. Others believe they were used simply as cheap supports.

Either way, they make you stop and stare — it’s that kind of place.

Light, Silence, and Reflections

The way the lights hit the water here... it feels almost unreal.

Soft amber glows, slow drips echoing off the stone, a stillness that feels sacred.

This is the same cistern where Inferno (Tom Hanks) and James Bond: From Russia with Love filmed their famous scenes.

But no camera can really capture how magical it feels standing there in person — it’s like time itself slows down.

Visiting Tips (From Your Local Guide 😉)

🕒 Open Hours: Usually 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM (but hours may change — we always check before your tour).

Ticket: The entrance fee is 1,500 TL per person for visitors (not included in Museum Pass). It’s a bit higher now, but totally worth it — this place is pure magic.

What to Wear: It’s cool underground — a light jacket helps, even in summer.

📷Best Time: Early morning or late evening — fewer people, more silence.
