How to Dress for Visiting Mosques in Istanbul — 2025 Guide

  • Of course, you can wear what you want, but remember this is a mosque.
  • Women should cover their heads with a scarf or shawl. If you forget, most mosques provide coverings, but using your own is more hygienic.
  • Shoulders must be covered, and short skirts or shorts are not appropriate.
  • For men, shorts should be below the knee.
  • T-shirts are fine, but sleeveless shirts are not suitable inside mosques.
  • Since you’ll need to remove your shoes, choose footwear that’s easy to take off and put on.
  • Istanbul can get hot in summer, so breathable and comfortable fabrics are recommended.
  • Dressing respectfully shows your respect for both the culture and the place you’re visiting.

Note:

In Islam, women’s head covering is instructed in the Quran (Surah An-Nur 31, Surah Al-Ahzab 59).

Men are also advised to dress modestly and simply.

These are religious rules based on respect and modesty.
