Jet Lag and Joy: An American’s First 12 Hours in Istanbul
Foggy brain, stiff neck, and zero idea where I was. But I had that one magical word in my inbox: "Welcome." The journey had begun.
07:15 AM – First Connection
Through passport control and into the arms of hospitality. A smiling man stood with my name on a sign. "Welcome to Istanbul, my friend," he said, like we'd known each other for years. My jet lag didn’t stand a chance.
08:00 AM – Tea and Awakening
First Turkish tea. Black, hot, and impossibly good. My stomach thought it was 1 AM, but this tea made it forget. I stood watching the city stir, seagulls wheeling above minarets.
09:30 AM – Blue Mosque Silence
Barefoot on cool stone. The hush of the Blue Mosque wrapped around me like a soft blanket. Even the chaos in my head quieted.
10:15 AM – Grand Bazaar Rush
Cinnamon, leather, gold, voices. My senses caught fire. I bought a scarf I didn’t need. I bartered for fun. I got lost on purpose. Jet lag was now a story I once told.
11:30 AM – Simit and Sunlight
On a bench by the Bosphorus with a sesame-crusted simit in hand, I watched ferries dart across continents. Asia, Europe, repeat.
12:00 PM – Call to Prayer and Clarity
From six directions the call rose. Over rooftops, through alleyways, into my chest. I felt it like a heartbeat.
In just 12 hours, Istanbul gave me everything: welcome, wonder, and the beautiful chaos of the in-between.
Jet lag?
Maybe I still had it.
But the moment I slipped into the city’s rhythm…
Walking beneath the shadows of minarets,
listening to the call to prayer echo through the streets,
sharing a simit with a smile—
that weight just lifted.
Istanbul wasn’t just a stopover.
It was the beginning of something.
